Overcoming months of opposition by Republicans in Congress, President Biden on Wednesday signed a military aid package worth $95 billion that will arm Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. “There used to be a line about Los Angeles that everyone was either a screenwriter or an actor,” says Scotti Sitz, owner of L.A. “I think in some respects, you could start to make the case that everyone here is now an interior designer.” Indeed, the city’s design scene has boomed, with new shops and showrooms sprouting up every month. What’s most exciting about this design renaissance, though, is the range of visions and styles represented around the city—due in part, perhaps, to the constant flow of new residents from around the country and world. Design scene is equally embracing of the primitive and the cutting-edge, the refined with the unrefined,” says Adam Blackman of Blackman Cruz, on Highland Avenue. Even with her new title mere hours away from release, a faction of the Book Club Bar crowd is already thinking about the future of the Maas-verse rather than wondering if the long-awaited crossover will play out as they’ve hoped.

House of Flame and Shadow
The promises of the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” crossover generated intense hype for Maas’s novel, sparking midnight release parties across the country, but the overall plot of “House of Flame and Shadow” is so complex that it overwhelms the reader. Bryce interacts with some pre-existing characters, but the character spends only a small sliver of the book’s nearly 850-page run in the world of Prythian. “House of Flame and Shadow” simply juggles too much to truly capitalize on Bryce’s world jump. The novel skips between many plotlines and locations, allotting only a few pages to each scene.

The current conflict is more than one country fighting to take over another; it is — in the words of one U.S. official — a shift in "the world order."Here are some helpful stories to make sense of it all. The stunning third book in the sexy, action-packed Crescent City series, following the global best sellers House of Earth and Blood and House of Sky and Breath. Hunt Athalar has found himself in some deep holes in his life, but this one might be the deepest of all. After a few brief months with everything he ever wanted, he’s in the Asteri’s dungeons again, stripped of his freedom and without a clue as to Bryce’s fate.
Ukraine's prime minister says, if passed, $60B U.S. aid package will be critical
Biden noted that the bill includes $9 billion for humanitarian assistance worldwide, including $1 billion for Gaza. "My commitment to Israel, I want to make clear again, is ironclad," the president said. He cited Iran's recent air attack on Israel, which involved more than 300 drones and missiles, though almost all were shot down and Israel suffered only minimal damage.
In addition to the series’ popularity online—where fans gush over its strong female leads, steamy romances, and trio of Fae-warrior love interests (affectionately known as the “Bat Boys”)—a TV adaptation co-written by Maas is currently in development at Hulu. "By the end of this book, you get the full extent of how these worlds connect to each other," Maas says. "As for how that will play out in future books across my various series, we shall see." Theia used the Harp and the Horn to open a portal to Hel, having learned that the planet had once overthrown the Asteri, and began plotting with one of its princes, Aidas.

On release night, he’s by her side smiling and fielding questions from fans throughout the evening. Nearly 12 years—and many thousands of pages—into her career as a published author, the appetite Maas’ readers have for her work is seemingly insatiable. In March 2023, Maas signed a new four-book deal with Bloomsbury on top of a pre-existing three-book contract that included House of Flame and Shadow.
Series Information
He sees no realistic prospect of a resolution — on the battlefield or through negotiations — in the near term. Ukraine's limited air defenses have performed extremely well over the past two years, according to military analysts, but the country has been vulnerable to attacks on cities and the power grid recently. Biden has faced heavy criticism from many on the left for supporting additional military assistance to Israel as it wages a war against Hamas in Gaza. The Palestinian death toll is more than 34,000, most of them civilians, according to Gaza health officials.
How Sarah J. Maas Built a Sprawling Fantasy Multiverse
Every character is also given a few seemingly world-shatteringly epic displays of power, but when they are constantly bested by yet another new magical moment, these characters lose their momentum and leave the reader dissatisfied. The plot is nevertheless addictive due to the dire situations that the cast finds themselves in, but Maas could have given her novel a more cohesive tone by focusing more on Bryce’s perspective and progression. Many of Maas’ readers, or “Maassassins” (these days, a fanbase isn’t a fanbase if it doesn’t have a quippy name), are relative newcomers to her work. I hear from several fans who say they first picked up one of her books in the last few years, with some citing the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic as the catalyst for the start of their Maas-verse journey. But there are recurring themes that run throughout their stories—that Maas reinvigorated their love for reading, or validated their affinity for the fantasy genre, or made them feel less alone.
The assistance for Ukraine, totaling $60.8 billion, accounts for nearly two-thirds of the total. This is considered urgent in Ukraine's effort to push back, or at least hold the line, against Russian forces that have had the upper hand in recent months. Referring to Ukraine, he added, "I'm making sure the shipments start right away — in the next few hours, literally, a few hours," Biden said. Last March, Maas signed a new four-book deal with Bloomsbury on top of a pre-existing three-book contract that included House of Flame and Shadow. Shifter-Fae who have elemental magic seems to be a clear reference to the Fae of Erilea from Throne of Glass—like Rowan Whitehorn, who can shift into a hawk and control the wind. As the Starborn heir, Bryce is able to obtain Silene's third of Theia's power from the chamber and returns to Midgard with the Starsword and Truth-Teller shortly afterward.
The Prythian Fae flooded into Midgard—where Rigelus and the rest of the Daglan had disguised themselves in new, unrecognizable forms, claiming to be Fae—and waged war on the human civilization there. During that war, shape-shifter Fae from another world (all of whom could turn into animals) appeared on Midgard. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data.
“House of Flame and Shadow” features seemingly alien creatures for its main characters, like mermen and angels, but their connections to one another and their believable actions make them feel like people that readers can care about and root for. Maas seems to have crafted the entire series around Bryce’s determination, fun spirit, and unending passion for her loved ones. When the pages start to blur and the magical mess becomes too much to handle, Maas swoops in with surprisingly tender moments that remind readers of the true stakes of the novel. Bryce constantly puts others before herself, and her willingness to do everything for her family — both found and biological — makes her incredibly relatable. It is clear that Maas is at her best when she highlights heartwarming themes such as undying love and the strength of friendship.

Using the immensely powerful magical objects known as the Dread Trove (the Mask, the Harp, the Crown, and the Horn) as well as the Cauldron, Theia and Fionn defeated the Daglan and became Queen and High King of Prythian. Centuries later, Theia gave birth to Silene and her older sister Helena within five years of each other. Herbst said the inflow of U.S. weapons now is not likely to determine the outcome of the war.
“But it’s a story that’s been brewing in the back of my mind for a long time...I think it’s going to be a very emotional book for me to write just in terms of the world I’ll be writing and the characters that might pop up." As the author of three best-selling series—Throne of Glass, A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR), and Crescent City—whose 15-plus books have sold more than 38 million copies worldwide, Maas has established herself as a fantasy fiction titan. Her stories are known for blending intricate world building and compelling character development with steamy romances—a combination that has made her name nearly synonymous with the burgeoning fantasy subgenre "romantasy." Maas attributes her ability to craft male characters who appeal to so many of her female readers to the relationship she has with her husband, Josh, who she’s been with since she was 18 and with whom she shares two children, Taran and 2-year-old Sloane. As Maas chats with me from her New York City home office, Josh briefly interrupts our video call to bring her a matcha latte.
She then allied with the humans she had previously been trying to conquer and, together with the armies of Hel, they all marched against the forces of the Asteri, which were led by Pelias. During a brutal final battle, Theia used the Harp to transfer a third of her power to each of her daughters and then gave them the Harp and the Horn, instructing them to return to Prythian and seal the way behind them. Pelias killed Theia and took possession of the Starsword, and Helene remained in Midgard with the Horn after sending Silene back to Prythian with the Harp. Silene explains that the High Fae of Prythian were slaves to the Daglan for 5,000 years before the uprising of Theia and her lover Fionn.
But after eight Throne of Glass books and four ACOTAR installments, Maas made her first true foray into adult fantasy (where she has since remained) with the 2020 publication of Crescent City book one, House of Earth and Blood. At that point, Maas had already decided the series’ second book, 2022’s House of Sky and Breath, would end with its human-fae hybrid heroine Bryce Quinlan making a magic-fueled jump into the world of ACOTAR. While her talent for character writing is made clear, Maas’s world-building weaknesses are apparent in “House of Flame and Shadow.” The novel is set in a contemporary fantasy world where magic and technology combine. This means that the reader may see an angel use elemental magic on the same page that that same fantastical character checks their text messages. Maas seems to shy away from the medieval settings of her other novels, but the magic does not mix well with the modern, and the established combination feels jarring.
